Mickalene Thomas received her BFA from Pratt Institute in 2000 and her MFA in painting from Yale University in 2002. In 2002–2003, she participated in the Artist-in-Residence program at The Studio Museum in Harlem. Awards include the Rema Hort Mann Visual Art Grant, the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, and the Pratt Institute Alumni Achievement Award. She is represented by several art galleries throughout the US—Lehmann Maupin in New York, Rhona Hoffman Gallery in Chicago and Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects. She was commissioned by The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) to create a new work in 2010 for MoMA’s facade on 53rd Street. Her work is in many public collections including the Guggenheim Museum; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Brooklyn Museum; The Studio Museum in Harlem; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C.; Yale University Art Gallery; and the Art Institute of Chicago. Her 2012/2013 solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum garnered rave reviews.
